Job Summary
The Tax Manager is responsible for minimizing the company’s tax risks while ensuring full compliance with tax, statutory, and regulatory obligations. Reporting directly to the Financial Controller and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, the Tax Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining effective relationships with tax authorities and other statutory bodies, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, and managing tax audits.
Key Responsibilities
1. Tax Management and Compliance
- Ensure timely compliance with all tax obligations, including VAT, NSSF, mining royalties, city levies, and other statutory requirements.
- Maintain effective working relationships with tax authorities (TRA), NSSF, mining authorities, local councils, and other stakeholders.
2. Liaison and Coordination
- Serve as the primary liaison with the company’s Tax Consultants and Tax Lawyers, ensuring high-quality service and value for money.
3. Accurate Reporting and Payments
- Prepare and file all statutory tax returns accurately and promptly, including transfer pricing documentation.
- Process and remit taxes and other statutory deductions to relevant authorities within deadlines.
4. Tax Accounting and Reconciliation
- Ensure accurate recording and reconciliation of tax and statutory obligations in the general ledger (GL SAP).
- Proactively manage monthly reconciliations, such as sales-to-VAT reports.
5. Tax Audits and Disputes
- Manage all tax audits conducted by the TRA and other statutory bodies, ensuring smooth preparation, execution, and resolution of audit findings.
- Address and clear outstanding tax exposures, including objections and appeals at TRAB/TRAT or Court of Appeal levels.
6. Record Maintenance and Analysis
- Maintain up-to-date records of all tax and statutory payments made since the company’s inception.
- Conduct strategic tax reviews and analyses to identify improvement opportunities.
7. Other Duties
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Financial Controller or CFO, including assisting with strategic tax planning.
Qualifications and Skills
Technical Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (or equivalent).
- Professional qualifications such as CPA, ACA, ACCA, or specialized tax certifications.
- Minimum 6–8 years of experience in finance, taxation, or auditing; external audit experience is an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian tax laws and regulatory frameworks.
- Familiarity with ERP systems, specifically SAP, and basic computer applications.
