JOB TITLE: CHILD SAFEGUARDING OFFICER

15 JANUARY 2026

ABOUT THE ROLE:

LOCATION: BABATI, MANYARA. Frequent travel to So They Can partner schools and communities is required.

REPORTS TO: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER 

HOURS OF WORK: Full time 45 per week Mondays to Fridays 

TERM: Full time on satisfactory completion of six (6) months’ probation

So They Can Tanzania is a registered International NGO operating in Babati District, Manyara Region. Founded in 2014 as part of So They Can International (Australia & New Zealand), we aim to transform the future of children and communities living in poverty through education. Our Vision: To improve the future of children and communities living in poverty through quality education. Our Mission: To provide quality education via improved learning conditions, teacher development, child well-being, health, and women’s empowerment, through partnerships with communities and government.

We implement the Umoja Education Collaborative in 29 government primary and 5 secondary schools across 4 Wards (Mamire, Endakiso, Qash, Gallapo) of Babati District, and collaborate with communities in 17 villages. Our focus includes teacher professional development, student well-being, school management capacity building, government partnerships, and quality early childhood development.

Our safeguarding approach aligns with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), the Tanzania Child Protection Laws and Personal Data Protection, and the Australian DFAT Safeguarding Policy, ensuring protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (SEAH). All staff and partners share responsibility for safeguarding. 

JOB PURPOSE: The Child Safeguarding Officer will lead the implementation of child safeguarding standards across So They Can Tanzania programs. This role ensures that children and our beneficiaries are protected from abuse and exploitation, staff and partners are trained, and programs comply with So They Can policies, national child protection laws, guidelines and international best practices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the implementation of child safeguarding and SEAH prevention measures across all So They Can programs and projects. 
  2. Coordinate and deliver safeguarding training for staff, partners, volunteers, and community stakeholders, maintaining all training records. 
  3. Support and strengthen Child Protection and Safeguarding (CPS) desks in schools and communities to fulfill their safeguarding responsibilities. 
  4. Collaborate with the communications team and champions network to develop child safeguarding awareness messages. 
  5. Facilitate child participation in the development and review of safeguarding policies and codes of conduct. 
  6. Conduct child protection, safeguarding and SEAH risk assessments and develop mitigation and management plans. 
  7. Promote a safe organizational culture with zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment
  8. Facilitate confidential reporting, documentation, and referral of safeguarding concerns through approved channels
  9. Maintain accurate safeguarding records in line with internal reporting and confidentiality requirements
  10. Maintain a list of service providers and facilitate prompt referral of reported cases.
  11. Conduct monitoring and supervision visits to both the communities and schools to ensure safeguarding compliance with national CPS guidelines, DFAT requirements, and internal policies 
  12. Work closely with program and MEL teams to integrate safeguarding into planning, delivery, and evaluation
  13. Organize forums or workshops to share learning on safeguarding practices across schools and community spaces 
  14. Facilitate membership of So They Can in networks that support Child Safeguarding. 
  15. Be the contact person for work done by So They Can network of Champions, including reporting, case management, training, capacity building, networking and participation in national and international events. 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Community Development, Social Work, Child Protection, Education, Sociology, Social Sciences or related field
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in child safeguarding, child protection, or SEAH prevention in an NGO or development context
  • Strong knowledge of Child laws, Safeguarding Policies, SEAH prevention, and survivor-centred approaches
  • Demonstrated experience in training facilitation, community engagement, child protection and safeguarding, case management, risk assessment, networking and reporting
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Fluency in English and Swahili
  • Willingness to travel regularly within program areas
