Job Purpose
The Internal Audit Manager will assist the Group Head of Internal Audit, East Africa, in evaluating and ensuring the effectiveness of internal controls to manage risks and achieve Watu’s strategic and operational objectives. This role also includes overseeing risk management programs executed by the second line of defense.
Key Responsibilities
1. Internal Audit (IA) Function Management
- Develop an internal audit charter, terms of reference, and service delivery approach.
- Conduct annual risk assessments to create a risk-based audit plan.
- Plan professional and career development for IA staff and manage the department’s budget.
- Deploy competent staff to ensure engagement objectives are met.
- Supervise and coach IA staff, conducting performance appraisals and ongoing professional development.
- Oversee the annual audit planning process.
2. Engagement Planning
- Align audit plans with IA and organizational strategies based on risk assessments.
- Document risk-based audit plans with clear objectives, scope, timing, and resources.
- Approve audit engagement programs and review their alignment with identified risks.
- Adjust audit plans to reflect new business rollouts or technological changes.
3. Engagement Execution
- Verify and maintain internal controls and compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
- Evaluate the reliability of financial and operational information and reporting systems.
- Provide an annual assessment of internal controls, risk management, and governance to the WATU TZ Board Audit Committee.
- Conduct reviews of key financial reporting controls and compliance systems.
- Execute ad hoc assignments and advisory services, maintaining independence and objectivity.
- Ensure proper documentation of audit findings and conclusions in working papers.
- Present audit findings and risk mitigation recommendations to process owners.
4. Information Gathering and Analysis
- Review business insights and provide actionable recommendations for improvement.
- Implement new data collection, analysis, and interpretation techniques.
5. Enterprise Risk Management
- Assess the adequacy of the organization’s combined assurance approach.
- Monitor risk management frameworks and maintain departmental risk registers.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Audit Completion: Achieve ≥85% of the annual audit plan with 70% of reports issued by year-end.
- Timely Reporting: Quarterly updates to the Board Audit and Risk Committee (BARC).
- Risk Mitigation: Generate cost savings and operational efficiencies from implemented recommendations.
- Compliance: Ensure updated compliance calendars and robust risk management programs.
- Training & Development: Maintain continuous professional certifications and meet training hour requirements.
Qualifications
Education
- University degree in a business-related field, preferably Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
Certifications
- CPA required.
- CIA or CISA certifications are advantageous.
Experience
- At least 5 years of internal or external audit experience, with 2 years in an audit committee reporting capacity.
Technical Skills
- Expertise in accounting, auditing standards, risk management frameworks, and compliance.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of corporate governance and regulatory risk matters.
- Proficiency in data manipulation tools and communication skills for all organizational levels.
