Role overview
The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of the Legal and Compliance function within AIS.
This is a hands on role where the individual will contribute to the development, implementation and oversight of legal, compliance, data privacy and governance matters of the Company.
This will include managing and reviewing governance systems, contracts with distribution partners, outsourcing partners and other suppliers, as well as the legal review of customer facing materials.
Grand Reinsurance Tanzania Limited (Grand Re), the first privately owned reinsurance company in Tanzania, was established in 2021 to provide robust and innovative reinsurance solutions tailored for the East African market.
Key responsibilities
- Coach, mentor and develop junior team members, setting clear standards and building a high-performing Legal & Compliance function.
- Act as the Data Protection OƯicer (DPO), overseeing the Company's data protection programme and ensuring compliance with applicable data protection requirements.
- Champion and embed the Grand Re Group Legal & Compliance framework locally, aligning policies, training and monitoring activities to Group standards.
- Monitoring regulatory developments and industry practice; track, interpret and communicate changes, commitments and supervisory expectations to drive compliant implementation.
- Leading and/or support internal investigations and remediation activities as required, ensuring thorough documentation, appropriate escalation and closure.
- Providing timely, pragmatic compliance advice to internal stakeholders, enabling business objectives while maintaining strong risk and control discipline.
- Leading end-to-end drafting, review and negotiation of commercial agreements with distribution, outsourcing and supplier partners, ensuring robust protections and commercially balanced terms.
- The position holder will report to the Chief Executive OƯicer and will be based at our Head OƯice in Dar es Salaam.
- Providing trusted counsel on regulatory and corporate governance requirements, partnering with stakeholders to maintain strong governance and defensible regulatory outcomes.
- Since its inception, it has become the second-largest reinsurer in the country.
- Serve as a strategic legal advisor to Management on a broad range of broad insurance matters, translating risk into clear, practical guidance for business decision-making.

- Drive rollout of new and updated policies and procedures, and ensure governance activities are executed accurately and on schedule.

- Advise the business on data protection matters (covering privacy-by-design, incidents and third-party risk) and support implementation of fit-for-purpose controls.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulators; manage regulatory inquiries, audits and submissions with high quality, responsiveness and appropriate stakeholder coordination.
- Act as the regulatory liaison with the Financial Intelligence Unit of Tanzania (FIU), coordinating engagements and ensuring clear, and accurate communications.
- Providing corporate secretarial support, covering governance documentation and Board/committee processes, in line with statutory and internal requirements.
- Adherence to applicable laws, regulations, industry standards and internal requirements. This as well covers design, implement and continuously enhance compliance policies, procedures and internal controls.
- Coordinating contentious matters, disputes and investigations, coordinating internal teams and external counsel to protect the Company's interests and reputation.
- Leading key governance and financial crime risk roles (covering anti-fraud and AML coordination) and act as a subject matter resource on capital markets and corporate governance matters.
Requirements
- Good technical experience in insurance or financial services industry is preferred, ideally in a leadership position.
- Bachelor's degree in Law.
